Singapore's Sustainable Waste Management Evolution: From Collection to Future Forward Solutions

Read: 437

The National Environment Agency NEA oversees comprehensive waste management services in Singapore, ensuring sustnable practices and environmentally conscious solutions to address the escalating levels of municipal solid waste. As Singapore's population and economy grow, so does the volume of waste, having increased over sevenfold from 1,260 tons per day in 1970 to a peak of 8,741 tons per day in 2021.

Waste management begins at source with households and businesses. Unsegregated waste is collected subsequently sent for incineration in the waste-to-energy WTE plants. This process significantly reduces waste volume by about 90, while also generating electricity as a byproduct, demonstrating Singapore's innovative approach to resource conservation and energy recovery.

The incinerated ash residue and non-incinerable waste are transported to Tuas Marine Transfer Station TMTS, an advanced facility designed for seamless transfer from vehicles into large barges. From there, specially-tlored tugboats facilitate a three-hour journey across the 30km stretch to Semakau Landfill, where most of Singapore's waste s up.

The Semakau Landfill, operational since April 1999 and Singapore’s sole landfill currently, is projected to meet waste disposal needs until at least 2035. In 2021, the landfill accepted an average dly intake of approximately 2,098 tons from incineration ash and non-incinerable waste sources.

Strategically designed to minimize environmental impact during construction, the Semakau Landfill safeguards the coral reefs along Pulau Semakau's western coast. The replanted mangrove areas have also thrived, highlighting Singapore’s commitment to sustnability.

The National Environment Agency NEA is currently planning for an Integrated Waste Management Facility IWMF, a future-oriented initiative designed to fulfill Singapore's waste management requirements while promoting long-term environmental sustnability. This state-of-the-art facility will incorporate advanced technologies med at maximizing energy and resource recovery from solid waste, further demonstrating the country's innovative approach.

The IWMF is envisioned to co-locate with Tuas Water Reclamation Plant TWRP within the same site of Tuas View Basin, enabling collaborative synergies that benefit both NEA and PUB operations.
