The Empowerment Journey: Building Financial Literacy for Workers on the Belt and Road Initiative

Financial knowledge has significantly boosted Cheng Zhongde's confidence. This Safety Officer, who moved from Sichuan to Jiangsu in 2009 with virtually no savings under his belt, now stands as a testament to financial education.

In pursuit of quick riches, he fell prey to an illegal investment scheme promising astronomical returns back in 2014, only to find himself losing the considerable sum borrowed from family and fris. With construction sites on Belt and Road Initiative projects often providing a secluded environment for workers, they are more susceptible to financial frauds due to their limited understanding of finance.

Recognizing this vulnerability, HSBC initiated a comprehensive program targeting workers on Belt and Road construction sites to enhance their financial literacy through workshops, sitcom-style educational content with NGOs, and other interactive methods.

Cheng Zhongde's story underscores the pivotal role in empowering individuals agnst deceit by equipping them with fundamental financial knowledge. He now understands that there are no get-rich-quick schemes; he must work hard for his earnings.

In a wider scope, HSBC has invested significantly into over two dozen financial education courses tlored to different segments like the elderly, students, rural youth, and more in local communities across China since 2005. These initiatives have reached over one million people, fostering a cycle of knowledge sharing that promotes societal growth and sustnability.
