Connected Minds Postdoctoral Fellowships
INTRODUCTION:
Advancements in technology are reshaping our world, creating a 'techno-social collective' where s and systems interact seamlessly. While these innovations hold significant potential, they also carry risks, particularly for vulnerable or marginalized communities. Our program, backed by the Canada Research Excellence Fund, York University, Queens’ University, and numerous partners from diverse sectors including industry, government, academia, healthcare, and non-profit organizations, envisions a future where technological progress promotes social health and justice worldwide with special emphasis on Indigenous populations in Canada.
The overarching goals of Connected Minds are:
To uncover how - interactions generate unforeseen, emergent properties at societal levels.
To anticipate how new technologies will disrupt our interconnected world.
To harness these insights to drive innovative research and technology development.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the postdoctoral award under Connected Minds, candidates must align their scholarly work with this program's core themes:
Co-creating Research for Societal Needs: Projects that collaborate with transdisciplinary academics and non-academic partners including Indigenous communities to develop research topics, priorities, and methodologies.
Fundamentals of Social Interaction: Studies across various scales, from local neural interactions to global social networks involving both s and s.
Designing and Developing Responsible Technologies: Initiatives that engage with stakeholders in industry, healthcare, government, and non-profits f innovation and policy development fostering societal welfare.
Fellowship Detls
Financial Support: $70Kyear for two years plus benefits.
Research Allowance: $8.5Kyear for networking activities over the same period.
Application Deadlines: September 30, 2024.
Duration: New fellows may start in either January or July of the following year.
Key Dates
Fellowship Start: No earlier than July 1 and no later than January 1 for Spring applications; December 1 to July 1 for Fall applications.
Extensions: Subject to budget avlability, exceptions can be granted under special circumstances.
Affirmative Action Policy
To address underrepresentation in our program:
At least 25 of fellowships will be reserved for candidates from equity-seeking groups.
Priority will also be given to Indigenous candidates or those proposing projects that specifically contribute to the betterment of Indigenous communities.
Supervisory Team Composition
Each postdoctoral candidate must have a primary supervisor who is an active member of Connected Minds based at York University or Queens’ University and differs in academic discipline from their prior advisor. The project also requires:
A transdisciplinary co-supervisor with expertise in neuroscience, technology, or societal studies.
An external collaborator outside the home institution to ensure cross-sectoral engagement.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must have:
Completed a PhD or equivalent degree by the fellowship's start date.
Not obtned their degree from the host institution within 2 years prior exceptions justified on the basis of significant academic divergence.
Started at York University or Queens’ University within their first six months to apply for this fellowship cycle.
Accountability
Successful applicants are accountable to the program guidelines and must adhere to all evaluation criteria outlined throughout each application phase.
